We have a traffic light poster set up in our classroom.  Green is where each child starts and wants to be at the end of the day.  We track this with magnetic cars on the light. If a child needs to be warned for any type of undesirable behavior, he/she’s car will be moved up to the yellow part of the light by the teacher.  If the behavior continues, the car will be moved to the red light indicating a consequence. The consequence will be a loss of recess for 5 minutes for each time the child’s car is placed on the red light.

stop light

(G) GREEN LIGHT:  Obeys all of the classroom and school rules.

(Y) YELLOW LIGHT: Serves as a warning that the student is not following rules and needs to monitor behavior

(R) RED LIGHT:  Loses 5 minutes of recess for not following rules

  • At the end of the day, the student’s position on the traffic light will be recorded on a behavior chart with stickers/stars.  Students who stay on green for 10 days will have the opportunity to choose a prize from the “prize box”.

Class Reward:  Each day the class can earn clothespins for good behavior, staying on task, working well in groups/individually, a good report from the lunch monitor, etc.  After earning 20 clothespins, the “Mystery Motivator” will be revealed. The “Mystery Motivator” is a special activity that the students are rewarded with for earning their clothespins.  This could be anything from extra recess to a special treat! The children don’t know what activity they are working towards, which makes it fun! Once the children have earned 20 clothespins, they will then work for 40.
